Zero Step or Gather Step

Players are often accused of taking three steps and travelling. Oftentimes when this happens they are using a technique known as a “Zero Step” or “Gather Step”. The zero step/gather step, occurrence of the first and second step and travelling altogether, depend on when a player controls the ball. “Control” of the ball is a subjective standard and up to the referee’s discretion.

A player almost always has control of the ball when they have grabbed the ball with two hands, discontinue their dribble and/or are not able to legally dribble again from where they have positioned the ball.
